JAKOBSTAD
Jakobstad was established by countess Ebba Brahe in 1652. She gave the town its name after her late husband Jacob de la Gardie. The town is renowned for it lively maritime traditions, e.g. exports of tar and timber. Ships built in Jakobstad sailed the oceans and the bark Hercules, for instance, was the first Finnish ship to sail around the world. The Jacobstads Wapen is a modern replica of an 18th century galleass and she sails and carries out chartered cruises in the summer months. Johan Ludvig Runeberg, Finland’s national poet, was born in Jakobstad. Also the present-day cultural life in Jakobstad is well worth noticing. There are specialized museum which provide very instructive tours, e.g. the Arctic Museum Nanoq and the Chicory Museum. Jakobstad is also known as a town of parks and gardens. Visit Vicar Aspegren’s famous gardens at Rosenlund or the popular School Park botanical gardens, both situated in downtown Jakobstad. There are beaches and guest harbours within and outside the town area. Jakob’s Festival in July attracts thousands of visitors to Jakobstad. www.jakobstad.fi

NYKARLEBY
Nykarleby is an idyllic little town at the mouth of the Lapuanjoki river. It was established in 1620, on the same date as Kokkola, as King Gustav II Adolf of Sweden wanted to reinforce the seafaring and trading traditions of this region. Nykarleby is also known as the ”fairytale town” because it is the home town of the renowned
Finnish writer, Zacharias Topelius. Kuddnäs, his childhood home, is among the oldest museums

PEDERSÖRE
Pedersöre is special because it has 650 year of history behind it. It is a large municipality with 19 villages, all with a very green approach to life. There are many thriving dairy farms in the villages. Tar distillation used to be a very important source of income in the old days, and the methods for burning tar are often demonstrated at cultural events among the pine forests. In Pedersöre you can go on lovely treks or take part in sport fishing in the many small lakes. The trek and walks are mapped to make your stay in nature safe. KRONOBY
Kronby is a municipality near the airport. Here you can enjoy outdoor life, fresh air, freedom, picnics, and exercise. Lengthy treks and lit-up skiing tracks call for enjoyable exercise during all the seasons. The bravest can paddle their way through the whirling rapids. Large forests, fields, and many lakes offer good opportunities for a sporty holiday or participation in various sporting events. Cultural events of music and theatre are often connected to the history of tar-burning or competitions in “walking on the logs” in the rivers. LARSMO
Larsmo is a nice little seaside community. Larsmo, consisting of a myriad of islands, forms part of the beautiful archipelago. Larsmo is located between Kokkola and Jakobstad. It is famous for its beautiful scenery near the lakes and the coastline. It is easy to drive, bike, or boat here, crossing several bridges and locks. Canoes can be hired from paddling clubs and you can explore the archipelago from the waterline. TerraMare is an excellent interactive exhibition teaching about the ongoing post-glacial land uprise of the Kvarken Archipelago. Larsmo is also the site of the largest embanked freshwater lake, Larsmosjön, in Finland.
